Varnish and Coating for Printing

A clear surface finish can improve the look of printed books and packaging while adding some resistance to fingerprints and scuffing. Varnish and coating use a liquid layer rather than the separate film found in Lamination for Printing, so the finished sheet stays thinner and closer to the original paper feel.

The right choice depends on the shine you want, how often the product will be handled and whether it needs folding, gluing or further finishing.

These protection levels are relative. Paper, ink coverage and coating thickness all influence the finished result.



When Is Standard Varnish Enough?

Not every printed product needs film lamination or a heavy coating. A thin varnish works well for book pages, brochures, catalogues and covers that need a cleaner surface without noticeably changing the paper.


For Brighter Images

With gloss varnish, photographs and illustrations gain a little more depth. Dark colors also appear richer because the surface reflects more light.

Choose it when you want a gentle sheen rather than the stronger shine created by gloss lamination or UV varnish. It is better suited to moderate handling because the protective layer remains relatively light.


For a Low-Reflection Surface

Where glare would compete with text or understated artwork, matte varnish gives the design a quieter finish. It suits text-heavy books, editorial layouts and packaging that should not look highly polished.

Large black areas and saturated colors may lose some depth under a matte surface. When those colors are important, compare a finished sample with the uncoated print before approving production.

When Does Aqueous Coating Make More Sense?

For book covers, cards, folders and paper packaging that need more everyday protection, aqueous coating offers a practical middle ground between standard varnish and lamination.

This clear, water-based coating normally covers most or all of the printed sheet. Once dry, it helps limit fingerprints, ink rubbing and light surface scuffs without adding the noticeable film edge associated with lamination.

Gloss, satin and matte versions are available. Gloss adds brightness without producing the intense shine of UV varnish, while satin gives a more balanced surface between gloss and matte.

Because aqueous coating is commonly applied across the whole sheet, it works best when the design can use one consistent finish. Areas intended for writing, gluing or certain finishing processes may need to remain uncoated.

When Is UV Varnish Worth Choosing?

For a stronger gloss effect, UV varnish creates a harder and more reflective surface. The liquid coating is cured with ultraviolet light, producing a smooth finish with better resistance to rubbing than standard varnish.

This option works especially well on coated book covers, cards and packaging with colorful artwork or large solid areas. On uncoated or heavily textured stock, absorption and surface variation can make the gloss less even.

Folds and creases also need attention. A thick UV layer may crack when the sheet is folded, so suitable scoring and production testing are important for cartons, folders and wraparound covers.

This page refers mainly to UV varnish applied across the full surface. When the gloss appears only on selected elements such as a title, logo or image, the process is called Spot UV and requires a separate mask in the artwork.

Coating or Lamination?

Liquid finishes keep the product lightweight and preserve more of the original paper character. Lamination adds a film layer, creating a more noticeable surface and stronger protection.

Varnish and coating do not make paper waterproof. For menus, frequently handled covers or packaging exposed to moisture, lamination will normally provide more reliable protection.



How Paper and Color Affect the Result


Coated and Uncoated Paper

Smooth coated paper keeps the liquid finish near the surface, producing a clearer and more even gloss. On uncoated paper, part of the coating is absorbed into the sheet, leaving a softer effect.

Texture matters as well. A heavy coating can make a textured paper feel smoother, so a sample should be checked when the original paper character is part of the design.


Changes in Printed Color

After gloss varnish or UV varnish is applied, colors often appear deeper and more saturated. Matte finishes move in the opposite direction by reducing reflections and softening contrast.

This visual change is especially noticeable on black covers, brand colors and large solid backgrounds. Any important Color Difference should be judged on a sample with the final coating included.


Folding, Gluing and Further Finishing

Coated surfaces may affect glue adhesion, pen ink and later finishing. Before production, identify any areas that will be folded, glued, foil stamped or written on. These areas may need a coating-free space or a compatibility test.

A separate coating file is not normally required for full-surface varnish, aqueous coating or UV varnish. Additional artwork is only needed when selected areas must remain uncoated or when a local effect such as Spot UV is specified.
