For a standard brochure with photographs and body text, specify 157 gsm matte coated paper for the first sample. It provides enough opacity for double-sided printing, keeps image detail clear, and remains flexible for common folds.

That specification changes with the structure. A flat card can use more weight. A multi-panel fold needs more flexibility. The right brochure paper must suit the finished size, coating, grain direction, and scoring plan—not just the GSM number.

A 157 gsm matte coated stock balances clear photographs, readable text, and a professional hand feel.

Its smooth surface supports colour images and fine graphics. The matte finish limits glare when photographs, prices, charts, and body text share one panel. It also feels professional without behaving like rigid card stock.

Change the brochure paper when the format demands it. Reduce the weight for repeated folds. Increase it for a single-fold piece, flat rack card, or stronger hand feel.

Match the Paper Weight to the Fold Structure

The fold structure sets the practical weight range. Use these figures for the first sample, then confirm the actual paper grade and finished size.

These are starting ranges, not fixed limits. A small format can feel much stiffer than a larger piece made from the same stock. Lamination also adds rigidity.

Can a Tri-Fold Use 250 gsm Paper?

Do not use 250 gsm as the default. It creates a stiff brochure paper structure and requires accurate scoring, panel compensation, and suitable grain direction. For most standard tri-folds, 128–157 gsm closes flatter and handles more easily.

Separate GSM From Actual Thickness

GSM measures paper weight in grams per square metre. Caliper measures the sheet’s physical thickness.

Two 157 gsm sheets can have different thickness, bulk, and stiffness because their fibre structure, coating, and surface compression differ. Compare real samples before approving brochure paper from a quotation.

A heavier sheet usually reduces show-through, but it also adds fold resistance, mailing weight, and stack thickness. Higher GSM does not automatically sharpen photographs. Surface smoothness and coating have a greater effect on image definition.

Choose the Surface by the Content

Use coated brochure paper for detailed photographs, diagrams, and strong colour. Use uncoated stock when writing, tactile character, or a softer appearance matters more.

Matte Works Best for Mixed Content

Choose matte when one panel carries photographs, body text, prices, maps, or schedules. It reduces reflections and keeps dense information comfortable to read.

Gloss Works Best for Large Images

Choose gloss when a small number of large photographs carry the design. It adds brightness and contrast, but glare can interfere with fine text and maps.

Uncoated Paper Suits Writing and Natural Branding

Choose uncoated stock for note fields, restrained layouts, or a natural paper feel. Detailed photography and very small text need a smoother grade. Strong texture can weaken edge clarity.

Keep the Main Fold Parallel to the Grain

The main fold should run in the same direction as the grain of the brochure paper. Paper bends more easily along the fibre direction, so the fold closes more naturally and shows less spring-back.

A cross-grain layout creates more resistance. This matters most on heavier, coated, laminated, or heavily inked sheets. Check grain direction during imposition, because rotating the artwork on the press sheet can change the fold result.

Neenah recommends scoring parallel to the grain and pretesting heavier stocks before full production.

Score Before Folding

Scoring compresses a controlled line before the sheet bends. Use it on coated paper, heavier stock, laminated surfaces, and designs with dark ink across the fold.

The score must match the artwork fold line. A flat colour proof cannot confirm cracking, closure, or spring-back because the sheet has not yet been folded.

Why Did the Printed Fold Crack?

The coating, ink film, and fibres must stretch around the fold. Cross-grain production, weak scoring, heavy coverage, or an unsuitable stock can make the surface break.

Choose Travel Brochure Paper by Layout

A photo-led travel brochure and a map-led travel brochure need different specifications.

For a photo-led design, start with 128–157 gsm matte coated stock. It supports destination photographs while keeping routes, schedules, and booking details readable.

For a map-style design with several folds, start with 105–128 gsm matte coated stock. The lighter sheet opens and refolds more easily. Keep faces, prices, route labels, and QR codes away from fold lines.

Gloss works when large destination photographs dominate. Matte is safer when each panel carries both images and practical information.

Approve the Printed Sheet and Finished Fold Together

Do not approve brochure paper from a swatch or flat proof alone. Approve the printed sheet and a full-size folded dummy as one production decision.

Check the printed sheet for:

  • Paper name, GSM, and caliper

  • Coating, whiteness, and opacity

  • Pale colours and dark solids

  • Small text and photograph detail

Check the folded dummy for:

  • Finished size and panel widths

  • Grain direction and score position

  • Fold order and flat closure

  • Spring-back

  • Fit in the envelope, rack, or display
