Crop Marks for Printing

Crop marks are thin horizontal and vertical lines placed outside the page corners. They show where the printed sheet should be cut to reach the final Trim Size.

They are production marks, not part of the book design, and they disappear after trimming.

Do You Need to Add Crop Marks?

Do not add crop marks automatically. Include them only when the printer or production template asks for them.

In commercial printing, the production team may generate its own marks during imposition. Adding another set can create overlapping or conflicting marks. Adobe also recommends confirming which printer’s marks the print provider expects.

A clean PDF without crop marks can still be print-ready when its page boxes and Bleed are set correctly.

Crop Mark Position and Offset

Crop marks must sit outside the bleed area, not on top of it.

For a file with 3 mm bleed, use an offset of at least 3 mm between the page edge and the crop marks. Adobe states that the offset should be greater than the bleed value; its InDesign reference gives 9 pt / 0.125 in as the minimum example for a 0.125-inch bleed.

The crop marks define the cutting position. They do not create bleed or change the finished page size.

Add Crop Marks in Adobe InDesign

Select File > Export.
Choose Adobe PDF (Print).
Open Marks and Bleeds.
Enable Crop Marks.
Set the Offset outside the bleed area.
Enable Use Document Bleed Settings when the file includes bleed.

Do not select all printer’s marks unless they are requested. Registration marks, color bars, and page information serve different production purposes.

Add Crop Marks in Adobe Illustrator

When saving or printing the artwork:

Open Marks & Bleed.
Enable Trim Marks.
Set the line weight and offset.
Keep the offset greater than the bleed value.

Illustrator also allows editable crop marks through Object > Create Trim Marks, but PDF export marks are usually cleaner for final output because they remain outside the artwork rather than becoming design objects.

Add Crop Marks to an Existing PDF

In Adobe Acrobat Pro, open:

All tools > Use print production > Add printer marks

Choose the required pages and add only the marks needed for the project. Acrobat can also use Set page boxes to define the TrimBox and BleedBox before marks are added.

Check first whether the PDF already contains printer’s marks. Adding a second set can cause the new marks to overlap the original ones or sit in a different position.

Crop Marks and PDF Page Boxes

Crop marks are visual lines. The PDF’s TrimBox stores the actual finished boundary, while the BleedBox defines the printable area outside it.

For production, accurate page boxes are more important than decorative marks around the PDF. A file with correct page boxes can be imposed and trimmed even when no crop marks are visible.
