Recycled Paper for Printing

Recycled paper can be used for book pages, covers, cards and paper packaging without limiting every project to a brown or visibly fibrous appearance. Available grades range from clean white and cream book paper to gray paperboard and natural recycled kraft.

The right choice depends on how the finished product should look and perform. Paper shade, surface smoothness, opacity and stiffness are usually more useful selection points than choosing a sheet only because it is described as recycled.

Compare Recycled Paper Grades

Recycled Paper GradeTypical AppearanceSuitable ApplicationsWhat to Consider
Recycled uncoated paperWhite, natural white, cream or light grayNovels, journals, workbooks and insertsOpacity, bulk, writing feel and image softness
Recycled coated paperSmoother and usually whiterCatalogues, illustrated books and printed coversImage detail, color strength and coating finish
Recycled cover paperSmooth or lightly textured in different colorsBook covers, endpapers, cards and foldersFolding, stiffness and surface consistency

Recycled kraft paperBrown or gray-brown with visible fibersBags, sleeves, wraps and natural-style packagingPaper shade, strength and muted print colors

The recycled content can vary within each category. A paper with visible fibers is not necessarily made with a higher percentage of recycled material, while a smooth white grade may still contain recovered fiber.

If your project requires a particular recycled percentage, post-consumer content or FSC-certified paper, include that requirement when requesting a quotation.

Different recycled paper grades for books and packaging

Recycled Paper for Books

Interior Pages

Recycled Uncoated Book Paper works well for novels, journals, manuals and other text-led books. Cream and natural-white shades create a softer reading surface, while whiter grades provide stronger contrast for diagrams and colored graphics.

For books with many pages, opacity and bulk are especially important. A sheet may have the required weight but still allow text from the reverse side to show through. A bulkier grade can also produce a more substantial spine without making the book unnecessarily heavy.

Writing journals and workbooks need a surface that accepts pen or pencil comfortably. A very rough or loose-fiber paper may not provide the clean writing result expected for these products.

Illustrated Books and Catalogues

A smooth recycled sheet is better suited to photographs, detailed illustrations and small colored graphics. Recycled Coated Paper provides stronger image detail and color contrast when the natural texture of uncoated paper is not part of the design.

An uncoated recycled grade can still be used for illustrated content, but the images will normally look softer and less saturated. This can suit editorial, art-led or natural-style books when the effect is intentional.

Covers and Endpapers

Heavier recycled paper can be used for paperback covers, hardcover wraps and endpapers. The selected sheet needs enough strength for folding and binding without cracking along the hinge or exposing loose surface fibers.

The cover and interior pages do not need to use the same recycled grade. A book may combine smooth recycled pages with a more textured cover, or use recycled endpapers as a visible material detail.

Recycled Paper for Packaging

Folding Cartons and Cards

Recycled paperboard can be used for retail cartons, sleeves, folders and printed cards. Some grades have a smooth white printing surface with a gray or natural-colored reverse, while others have a similar appearance on both sides.

The reverse side matters when it remains visible after the carton is opened. A white-backed grade creates a cleaner interior, while a gray-backed board makes the recycled construction more noticeable.

Paperboard thickness alone does not determine how firm the finished carton will feel. Stiffness, box size and structure also affect the result. Samples should be compared in the intended shape rather than judged only as flat sheets.

Bags, Sleeves and Wraps

Recycled Kraft Paper suits paper bags, product sleeves and wraps where a brown or gray-brown surface supports the design. The visible paper color creates a natural appearance but also changes how printed colors look.

For rigid boxes, recycled grayboard can provide the internal structure while a different paper is wrapped around the outside. This allows the box to use a recycled core without requiring the exterior to have a gray or brown recycled-paper appearance.

How Recycled Paper Changes Printed Artwork

The Paper Shade Shows Through

Standard printing inks are not fully opaque. On cream, gray or brown recycled paper, the paper color influences light artwork and unprinted areas.

Pale colors may appear warmer or less vivid, and white parts of the artwork will show the paper itself unless white ink is added. Dark recycled paper may require White Ink beneath selected graphics to keep light colors and small details visible.

Bright white recycled paper provides a more neutral base when accurate brand colors or photography are important.

Surface Texture Affects Detail

Visible fibers and a rough surface can soften fine lines, small text and photographic detail. Large illustrations, bold typography and simple graphics are generally more suitable for strongly textured grades.

A smoother recycled sheet produces cleaner detail and more even solid colors. If the design contains small reversed text or fine linework, compare it on the actual paper rather than relying on a digital mockup.

Flecks and Shade Variation May Be Visible

Small specks and slight shade variation are part of the appearance of some recycled papers. They can complement natural, handmade or understated designs, but may be distracting on artwork that requires a clean, uniform white background.

The same design can also show a noticeable Color Difference when moved between white, cream, gray and brown recycled stocks.

Recycled Paper Is Not Automatically Weak

The use of recycled fiber does not by itself determine paper quality. Different recycled grades can vary considerably in opacity, smoothness, tear resistance and stiffness.

Book pages should be selected by readability, opacity and page count. Covers and packaging need suitable folding strength and structural support. The paper weight in GSM provides a starting point, but it does not describe all of these properties.

A recycled sheet that works well for interior pages may be unsuitable for a cover, just as a stiff recycled board may be too heavy for a book with many pages.

Foil, Embossing and Surface Protection

Foil Stamping, embossing and debossing can create a strong contrast against natural recycled paper. Foil is especially effective when full-color printing would appear muted on a brown or gray surface.

Deep texture can interrupt very fine foil lines or shallow pressed details. Designs with small lettering or closely spaced elements should be tested on the selected stock.

Lamination adds protection to recycled covers and packaging but makes the surface feel smoother and less paper-like. If the natural texture is part of the intended appearance, an unlaminated surface or a lighter coating may be more suitable.

Recycled, FSC-Certified and Recyclable Mean Different Things

Recycled paper describes the fiber used to make the sheet. FSC certification relates to verified material sourcing. Recyclability depends on the complete finished product, including any film, coating, adhesive, foil, plastic window or other added material.

A project can use recycled paper without carrying an FSC label, and FSC-certified paper is not always made entirely from recycled fiber.

If an FSC label or a minimum recycled percentage is required, state this before the paper is selected. For products made from several materials, identify whether the requirement applies to the pages, cover, wrapping paper, internal board or complete product.

Approve the Actual Paper

A physical sample gives a more accurate view of the paper shade, fibers, surface and stiffness than a screen image. For color-sensitive books or packaging, review a printed sample on the intended stock.

The sample should also include the planned foil, embossing, lamination or coating when those finishes affect the appearance. For repeat orders, keep an approved copy as a reference because minor differences may occur between paper batches.
