Kraft Paper for Printing

Kraft paper combines a visible fiber texture with a natural brown, white or recycled surface. It can be used for book covers, endpapers, paper bags, sleeves, folding cartons, rigid box wraps and corrugated packaging.

The paper color becomes part of the printed design, while its strength and stiffness affect the finished structure. Both appearance and product use should therefore be considered before selecting a kraft grade.

Choose the Kraft Paper Type

Kraft TypeAppearanceSuitable UsesPoints to Check
Natural brown kraftWarm brown with visible fiber characterBags, wraps, sleeves and natural-style packagingLight printed colors become darker
White kraftWhite or white-faced surfacePackaging requiring cleaner color reproductionConfirm whether one or both sides are white
Recycled kraftBrown or gray-brown with more variationBags, inserts, wraps and recycled-style packagingShade, smoothness and strength vary

These descriptions can overlap. A white kraft stock may contain recycled fiber, while natural brown kraft may be produced mainly from virgin fiber.

How Brown Kraft Changes Printed Color

Dark and Light Colors

CMYK and many spot inks are partly transparent. The brown paper shows through the ink, making photographs and colors appear warmer, darker and less saturated than they would on white stock.

Black, dark blue and deep green usually remain clear. Pastels, pale colors and bright process colors change more noticeably. Important colors should be checked on the selected kraft paper rather than approved from a screen.

White Ink Underprint

Unprinted areas remain brown. White objects in the artwork also disappear unless they are produced with a separate ink.

White Ink can be printed alone or placed beneath other colors. An underprint improves brightness but does not completely hide the paper texture or turn kraft into white coated stock.

Registration Between White and Color

White underprint and colored artwork are printed as separate layers. Small registration movement can leave a narrow white or brown edge around fine details.

The white layer should sit slightly inside the colored artwork where necessary. White areas must also be supplied as a clearly named spot-color layer rather than left blank in the file.

Choose the Weight and Structure

ApplicationCommon Starting Range
Wrapping paper and lightweight inserts80–120 gsm
Endpapers, sleeves and small paper bags120–180 gsm
Larger bags and stronger printed wraps150–250 gsm
Cards, covers and folding cartons250–350 gsm

GSM alone does not determine load capacity. Papers with the same weight can differ in thickness, stiffness, tear resistance and fiber strength.

Bags and Flexible Products

Paper bag strength also depends on the bag dimensions, handle attachment, bottom construction and product weight. A heavier sheet cannot correct an unsuitable bag structure.

Book covers, endpapers and sleeves need enough body for their size without becoming difficult to fold, wrap or bind.

Cartons and Rigid Packaging

Folding cartons require suitable stiffness and crease performance. Heavy kraft board may hold its shape well but resist folding if the crease is too narrow or shallow.

Kraft paper wrapped around a rigid box provides the visible surface; the greyboard underneath provides the structure. In corrugated packaging, stacking strength depends on the complete combination of liners and fluting rather than the outer kraft layer alone.

Plan Folds, Cuts and Glue Areas

Creasing and Cutting

Heavy kraft paperboard should be scored before folding. Solid ink crossing the crease may crack when the board, ink coverage and scoring channel are not compatible.

Rougher grades can leave visible fibers along cut edges. Small holes and narrow shapes may need adjustment when preparing Die Cutting.

Glue Areas

Uncoated kraft normally accepts adhesive well. Heavy ink, varnish and lamination can reduce direct contact between the glue and paper fibers.

Glue zones should remain free from printing and surface finishes where required. Coated or heavily recycled kraft may also need an adhesion test.

Select Finishing for the Kraft Surface

Foil and Pressed Effects

Foil Stamping creates clear contrast on brown kraft. Gold, copper, silver and opaque colored foils remain more visible than transparent printed colors.

Paper texture affects foil coverage and edge sharpness. Embossing and debossing also lose fine detail on coarse grades, so small lettering and large solid areas should be tested.

Lamination and Varnish

Lamination for Printing adds surface protection but reduces the natural paper feel. It may also deepen the brown color and increase reflection.

Clear varnish can darken selected areas or create an uneven appearance on absorbent kraft. Approve the finish on the actual stock when the original shade and texture matter.

Brown Kraft Does Not Automatically Mean Recycled

Brown color does not prove recycled content, certified sourcing or compostability. Virgin kraft can also be brown, while recycled grades contain different percentages of recovered fiber.

Specify the required FSC certification, recycled percentage or supporting documentation before production. Food-contact, grease-resistant and moisture-resistant packaging may require additional barriers and testing; kraft appearance alone does not confirm these properties.

Approve the Actual Kraft Stock

Natural kraft ranges from pale tan to deep brown, and visible fibers or small specks are common. White kraft also varies in brightness and reverse-side color.

Check the paper together with the intended printing, white underprint and finishing. For repeat orders, retain the approved reference because another kraft grade can change the color, stiffness, folding performance and finished Color Difference.
