Safe Area for Printing

The safe area is the space inside the final Trim Size where important content should stay. It is a layout guide only and will not appear on the printed page.

Background colors and images can extend through the trim into the Bleed, but text, logos, page numbers, barcodes, and small graphics need more distance from the cutting edge.

Recommended Safe Distance

There is no single safe-area value for every book structure. The final production template takes priority, but these figures work as practical starting points:

The inside edge of an interior page may need more room. Set this separately through the Binding Margin and Gutter rather than applying the same value to all four sides.

Some publishing platforms use their own minimum margins. For example, Amazon KDP specifies outside margins of at least 0.25 inch for pages without bleed and 0.375 inch for pages with bleed. These are KDP requirements, not universal commercial-printing standards.

Safe Area on Interior Pages

Keep the following elements inside the page guides:

• Body text and headings

• Page numbers

• Captions and footnotes

• Small icons and decorative lines

• Important parts of illustrations

A full-page illustration may extend beyond the trim, but faces, labels, speech bubbles, or other key details should stay inside the safe area.

Page numbers usually look more balanced when placed about 8–12 mm from the bottom and outside edges. Very small books may use tighter spacing, but anything close to the trim should be checked carefully.

Safe Area on Covers

For a cover, the safe area applies around the outer trim and near structural lines.

Keep the title, subtitle, author name, logo, and barcode away from:

• Outer cutting edges

• Spine folds

• Hardcover joints

• Dust-jacket folds

• French flaps

• Die-cut windows

The safe distance around a spine or joint is based on the approved Book Cover Template, not only on the outer trim size. A title that appears centered in the digital file may look off-center after folding if it sits too close to a structural line.

Barcode text and bars should also remain on a flat, unobstructed area. Avoid placing them across a fold, joint, strong texture, or finishing edge.

Setting Safe Area in Adobe InDesign

InDesign uses margin guides to mark the safe content area.

1. Select the required pages in the Pages panel.

2. Open Layout > Margins and Columns.

3. Enter the Top, Bottom, Inside, and Outside values.

4. Apply the settings to the parent page when the same guides are needed throughout the book.

Inside and outside values are more useful than left and right values for facing-page documents because they automatically switch between left-hand and right-hand pages. Adobe allows margins to be applied to individual pages, spreads, or parent pages.

These are layout starting points rather than fixed production limits. The final values depend on the book size, page count, and design.

Setting Safe Area in Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator does not have the same page-margin system as InDesign. Use guides inside the artboard:

1. Turn on View > Rulers > Show Rulers.

2. Drag guides onto the artboard.

3. Position them at the required distance from each trim edge.

4. Lock the guides before adjusting the artwork.

For a cover, add separate guides for the spine, folds, joints, and other structural areas shown on the production template.

Check the Exported PDF

Safe-area guides are usually non-printing, so they should not appear in the final PDF.

Open the exported file and check that important content still has enough clearance from the page edge. When the book includes different page sizes, fold-outs, or cover components, review those pages separately rather than assuming one guide setting applies to the entire project.
