Spot Color for Printing

Spot color uses a specially mixed ink to print a specific color directly, instead of creating it through CMYK combinations.

It is mainly used when a color needs to remain consistent or when standard CMYK Process Color cannot achieve the desired result.

How Spot Color Works

CMYK printing creates colors by combining four standard inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

Spot color works differently. A specific ink color is prepared separately and printed as an additional color layer.

This allows better control over colors that need accurate reproduction, such as brand colors or special ink effects.

Spot Color vs CMYK

Spot color and CMYK are suitable for different printing requirements.

CMYK is commonly used for photographs and complex images, while spot color is more suitable when a specific color needs to stay consistent.

When to Use Spot Color

Spot color is commonly used for:

  • Brand colors that require accurate matching

  • Special inks such as metallic or fluorescent colors

  • White ink printing on dark materials

It is especially useful when color consistency is more important than using a standard CMYK process.

Spot Color in Artwork Files

Spot colors should be set up as separate color elements in the artwork file.

Before submission, check:

  • Spot colors are clearly named.

  • The spot color layer is separated from the main artwork.

  • The intended use of each spot color is clear.

A spot color used for printing should not be confused with separate layers created for finishing processes.

Spot Color and Pantone Color

Many spot colors use standardized references such as Pantone to communicate specific colors between designers and printers.

When accurate color matching is required, Pantone Color can be used as a reference during production.

Spot Color and Special Effects

Some printing effects require separate ink layers or production layers, such as:

  • White ink

  • Metallic ink

  • Other special effect inks

These elements should be clearly separated from the main artwork to avoid incorrect output.

Related requirements can also be checked in Special Finishes.

Check Spot Color Before Export

Before exporting the final file, check:

  • Spot colors are correctly defined.

  • Unused spot colors are removed.

  • The correct areas use the intended spot color.

  • The final PDF keeps the required color information.

Confirm the spot color setup before production begins, as changes after printing starts may affect cost, schedule, and color consistency.
