Fonts and Outlines for Book Printing

Fonts in a book file can stay as live text or be converted into vector outlines. You usually do not need to outline the entire book.

For interior text, keeping fonts editable is the better choice. Outlines are more useful for fixed graphic elements such as cover titles, logos, and finishing artwork.

Live text compared with outlined text

Live Text and Outlined Text

Live Text
Outlined Text
Uses the original fontBecomes vector shapes
Text can still be editedNormal text editing is lost
Font size and spacing remain adjustableCharacters are edited as paths
Font must be available or embeddedNo longer depends on the font file

Once outlined, the appearance of the letters is fixed, but changing the wording becomes much harder.

Keep Book Interior Text Editable

Body text, captions, page numbers, footnotes, and other long-form content should normally remain live text.

There is no need to turn hundreds of pages into vector paths. It makes corrections harder and can make the file unnecessarily complex.

For a final PDF, keep the text live and use proper Font Embedding instead.

When Outlines Are Useful

Outlines work well when the text is treated more like artwork than normal typesetting. Common examples include:

  • Cover titles

  • Logos and custom lettering

  • Foil stamping text

  • Spot UV artwork

  • Embossing or debossing artwork

  • Die-cut lettering

For example, a foil title can be converted to outlines and supplied as a separate vector layer without requiring the original font during production.

Outline Text Only After It Is Final

Check the wording, font, spacing, and position before converting anything.

A practical workflow is:

Editable artwork → final check → save a copy → convert the required text to outlines

Keep the editable version. If the title or wording changes later, you can update the original text instead of rebuilding the outlined letters.

Convert Text to Outlines in Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator is usually the most practical choice for cover titles, logos, and separate finishing artwork.

  • Select the required text.

  • Choose Type > Create Outlines.

  • Check the shape, spacing, and position.

  • Save the outlined production version separately from the editable artwork.

The converted letters should remain as vector paths. Do not rasterize them if the production process requires vector artwork.

Outlining Text in Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign

InDesign also allows selected text to be converted through:

Type > Create Outlines

This can be useful for an individual display title or graphic element inside an InDesign file.

For normal body text, leave the fonts live. Outlining an entire interior usually adds work without improving the print file.

Check the Final Outlined Artwork

Before submitting the file, zoom in and check small lettering, thin strokes, counters inside letters, and the spacing between characters.

For foil, UV, embossing, or other finishing layers, make sure the outlined artwork still aligns exactly with the printed design.

If the rest of the document uses live fonts, confirm the Font Embedding before preparing the final Print-Ready File.
