Overprint in Printing

Overprint controls what happens when two colored objects overlap. When it is enabled, the lower ink remains and the upper ink prints on top. When it is disabled, the upper object removes the area below through knockout.

This is a color-separation setting, not an opacity or transparency effect. It can change the printing plates even when the artwork looks unchanged in a normal PDF viewer.

Overprint and Knockout

For example, a cyan object overprinting a yellow background may produce a green overlap. With knockout, the yellow is removed beneath the object, so the cyan prints by itself.

Most colored objects should knock out unless the ink overlap is intentional.

Why Black Text Often Overprints

Small text and fine lines made with 100% black are often set to overprint colored backgrounds. Keeping the background plates continuous reduces the chance of a thin white edge appearing if the black plate shifts slightly during printing.

Many layout programs apply this behavior automatically to their default 100% black swatch. It may not apply to black tints, custom CMYK mixtures, or objects that only appear black because of an effect.

Large headings, logos, and solid black areas also need separate attention because the colors underneath may affect their appearance. The correct CMYK Process Color build depends on whether the black is used for fine detail or a large printed area.

Where Files Commonly Go Wrong

• Colored artwork: Accidental overprint can make text, logos, or graphics darker and change their hue because the ink below remains.

• White objects: Process white contains no ink. If a white fill or stroke is set to overprint, it may disappear instead of knocking out the background.

• Spot-color plates: A Spot Color may need to overprint for a specific production purpose, but it should not be enabled automatically. The intended plate interaction determines the correct setting.

Overprint can also be applied separately to an object’s fill and stroke. A border may therefore behave differently from the area inside it.

Check the Final PDF

Turn on Overprint Preview while working in Illustrator or InDesign, then check the exported PDF with Output Preview in Acrobat Pro. Viewing the color separations individually shows whether the ink below has been retained or removed.

Do not rely on browser previews, exported images, or basic PDF viewers, as they may not simulate the printed overlap correctly.

During the Prepress Artwork review, confirm the setting for small black text, white elements, colored objects, and separate production plates. Do not enable or remove overprint across the entire file without checking what each object is meant to do.
