ICC Color Profile for Printing

An ICC color profile tells software how the colors in a file should be read. RGB Color and CMYK Process Color identify the color mode, while the profile defines the specific color space or printing condition behind those values.

Without the correct profile, the same color values may look different when the file is opened, converted, or printed.

What Does an ICC Profile Do?

The source profile describes the colors already in the artwork. The output profile describes the target printing condition.

Color-managed software uses both profiles when converting the file. It adjusts the color values to keep the appearance as close as possible within the printable color range.

An ICC profile does not guarantee an exact screen-to-print match. Paper, ink, press settings, and viewing light still affect the finished color.

Embed, Assign, or Convert?

These actions work differently.

Assigning a profile does not change the color values, but it can change how the artwork looks. Converting changes the values to suit the destination profile.

Do not assign a different profile simply because the file looks wrong. If the original profile is unknown, assigning one at random can make the color problem worse.

Which Profile Should You Use?

Use the profile requested for the actual production condition whenever one is provided. The correct choice depends on the printing process, paper surface, ink, and press calibration.

A profile intended for coated paper may not suit uncoated paper because the two surfaces absorb ink differently. Choosing a profile only because it is common in a particular country does not mean it matches the project.

If no output profile has been specified, keep the correct profile embedded in the artwork and identify it when submitting the files. Do not remove the profile or convert the artwork to a random CMYK working space.

Be Careful with Existing CMYK Files

CMYK artwork is not automatically ready for every printer.

Converting an existing CMYK file to another profile can change how blacks and neutral grays are built, as well as the total amount of ink used. Small black text may also become a four-color mixture if the conversion is handled incorrectly.

If the file already contains a CMYK profile, first check whether it matches the intended printing condition. If the file has no profile, confirm how it was originally prepared before assigning or converting anything.

A Spot Color should normally remain a separate named ink. It should only be converted to CMYK when the production specification requires it.

ICC Profiles in PDF Files

A print PDF may contain embedded profiles and an output intent. The output intent identifies the printing condition for which the PDF was prepared, but it does not automatically correct incorrectly converted or untagged elements.

The profiles, color spaces, and output intent should be checked during the Prepress Artwork review before the file is approved for production.
