Line Thickness for Book Printing

Very thin lines can look fine on screen but become weak, broken, or disappear in print. Line thickness should be checked at the final printed size, especially for borders, diagrams, line drawings, and small decorative details.

For most standard printed artwork, 0.25 pt is a practical minimum starting point. Strokes thinner than 0.25 pt may be too fine for reliable output.

Practical Line Weights

ArtworkPractical Starting Point
Fine rules and simple line art0.25 pt or thicker
Borders and dividers0.5 pt or thicker
White or reversed lines0.5 pt or thicker
Small decorative details0.5 pt or thicker

These are starting values rather than fixed limits. Paper surface, ink coverage, printing method, and finishing process can all affect how a thin line reproduces.

Check Lines at the Final Size

A vector line stays sharp when resized, but its stroke weight may also scale depending on how the artwork is transformed.

For example, a 0.5 pt line reduced to 50% may become 0.25 pt. Check the final stroke weight after scaling rather than relying on the original artwork size.

Keep logos, diagrams, and other fine artwork as Vector Graphics whenever possible.

Avoid Very Thin Reversed Lines

A thin black line on white paper is usually easier to hold than a thin white line knocked out of a dark background.

Give reversed lines a little more weight, especially when they sit inside heavy color areas. The same applies to small gaps between shapes—if the gap is too narrow, surrounding ink can make it look partially closed.

Line Thickness for Special Finishes

Foil stamping, Spot UV, embossing, debossing, and die-cut artwork often need stronger lines than normal printed graphics.

Do not assume that a line that prints well in CMYK will also work for a finishing process. Keep the finishing artwork as clean vector paths and confirm the minimum line width for the selected process before finalizing the file.

Check Raster Line Artwork

If line drawings are supplied as raster images, their sharpness also depends on Image Resolution.

Low-resolution line art can develop uneven or jagged edges even when the original line looks thick enough. Whenever the source artwork is available as vector paths, keep it vector instead of converting it to JPEG or another raster format.

Check the Final PDF

Zoom in on borders, diagrams, small icons, and other fine details in the exported PDF. Pay attention to lines that were scaled, placed over dark backgrounds, or used in separate finishing artwork.

Very thin PDF hairlines can be detected and replaced with heavier strokes during prepress when necessary, but it is better to correct the original artwork before preparing the final Print-Ready File.
