A gradient creates a gradual transition between two colors or between a color and paper white. On screen the change may look continuous, but printing reproduces it through halftone dots with different ink densities.
When the transition does not contain enough usable tonal steps, the smooth fade can break into visible bands. Long, subtle gradients and dark-to-light fades usually show this problem most clearly.

Banding can enter the artwork at several stages. Finding where it first appears is more useful than simply blurring the gradient.

Compare the working file with the exported PDF before changing the design. If the original gradient is smooth but the PDF is not, rebuilding the artwork will not solve the actual export problem.
Simple backgrounds and graphic shapes are usually cleaner when kept as Vector Graphics. A vector gradient can be resized without spreading a limited number of pixels across a larger area.
Photographic or textured gradients may remain raster images, but they should be prepared at their final placement size and meet the required Image Resolution. Enlarging a small raster gradient makes existing tonal steps more noticeable.
For raster artwork, a higher bit depth preserves more tonal values. Light dithering can also add fine variation between neighboring tones, making visible bands less obvious. The effect should remain subtle so it does not add an unwanted grainy texture.

Prepare and check the gradient in the intended output color space. Converting it after approval may change the colors or compress part of the tonal range. The correct ICC Color Profile helps the software interpret and convert those values for the target printing condition.
In a CMYK gradient, each ink channel changes separately. Poorly balanced values can cause the transition to drift through an unwanted color, while a heavy CMYK mixture at the dark end may create excessive ink coverage.
The light end also needs attention. Very low ink percentages may stop reproducing before the gradient reaches zero, leaving a visible edge instead of a natural fade into the paper. There is no single safe minimum for every project because coated, uncoated and textured papers handle fine halftone dots differently.

A tint gradient made from one Spot Color normally remains on a single printing plate. A transition between two spot colors, or between spot and process colors, uses multiple plates and needs its separations checked carefully.
Do not judge these gradients only by their composite appearance. An unintended spot color may remain in the PDF and create an additional printing plate even when the page looks correct.
Inspect the final PDF at its actual output size and review the individual color separations. Confirm that the gradient uses the intended CMYK or spot-color plates and that no part has been unexpectedly rasterized or altered during export.
Browser previews and compressed images can create display bands that are not present in the file, so they are not reliable for approval. Gradients that fade into transparency also need checking after export because transparency processing can change their edges or tonal smoothness.
For a large or color-critical gradient, a printed proof on representative paper gives a more useful reference than the screen alone. The final gradient, separations and output behavior should be confirmed during the Prepress Artwork review.
