Spot UV Printing

Spot UV places a clear UV-cured coating over selected parts of printed artwork. Titles, illustrations, patterns and other details catch the light while the surrounding surface remains unchanged.

The effect is mainly decorative. It does not protect the entire cover or package. When full-surface protection is required, compare it with Varnish and Coating for Printing or lamination instead.

Names such as Sand UV and Textured UV are not completely standardized across suppliers. Their roughness, gloss and height should be confirmed with a physical sample.



Where Each Effect Works Best


Clean Gloss Contrast with Standard Spot UV

For a polished contrast without noticeable height, standard Spot UV can follow a title, image detail or background pattern. The effect becomes especially clear when light moves across a matte surface.

Covering too much of the artwork reduces that contrast. On an already glossy background, the coated areas may also be difficult to distinguish.

A Fine-Grain Surface with Sand UV

When a smooth glossy patch feels too polished for the artwork, Sand UV introduces a finer, drier texture. Broad geometric shapes, stone-like graphics and abstract backgrounds usually show the grain more clearly than small text.

The texture should support the printed image rather than cover every available space. Large uninterrupted areas also make it easier to judge whether the grain is consistent.

More Height with Raised UV

Extra coating thickness creates a relief that can be both seen and felt. Short titles, bold symbols and strong graphic outlines benefit more from this treatment than fine paragraphs or complicated linework.

The height varies with the production method, substrate and requested effect. Avoid assuming that every Raised UV sample will have the same thickness.


Patterned Touch with Textured UV

Instead of using one uniform grain, Textured UV can follow a designed pattern. Repeated lines, ripples, grids or irregular surface details give customers something to feel as they handle the book or package.

Sand UV may be treated as one specific type of textured finish, while “Textured UV” can describe a wider range of tactile results. A reference sample removes uncertainty when a particular feel is required.

The Base Surface Controls the Contrast

A smooth matte background normally gives Spot UV its strongest visual contrast. For this reason, it is often combined with matte or soft-touch Lamination for Printing.

Standard Spot UV may appear much weaker over gloss lamination because both surfaces already reflect light. Uncoated or heavily textured paper can also reduce edge sharpness and create a less even coating.

Compatibility still needs to be checked when UV coating is applied over soft-touch film. The coating must bond properly rather than peel or separate during handling.

Because the clear layer changes how light reflects from the print, dark colors beneath it may look slightly deeper. Important color and surface combinations should be approved together rather than judged from separate samples.



Spot UV Needs a Separate Artwork Mask

The printing artwork and UV placement must align at the same finished size. Supply the effect on a separate vector layer or page and name it clearly, such as SPOT UV, SAND UV, RAISED UV or TEXTURED UV.

Use a solid spot color to show the coated areas. Although the mask may appear black in the file, the finished coating remains clear. When several UV effects appear in one project, each one needs its own clearly named layer.

Gradients, transparency and partial opacity should not be used unless a variable-height workflow has already been confirmed. During Prepress Artwork review, the mask should be checked against the supplied print file before production.



Fine Details and Registration Need Space

Very thin lines, tiny text and narrow gaps may lose definition once the coating is applied. Raised and textured effects generally need more space than flat Spot UV because the coating has greater thickness.

A slight production tolerance also exists between the printed image and the UV layer. Hairline borders that must sit exactly on the edge of a printed element can make small shifts more noticeable. Allowing the UV area to sit comfortably inside the artwork usually gives a cleaner result.



Keep Spot UV Away from Structural Areas

Do not place thick or textured UV directly across trim lines, folds, book spines or hardcover hinge areas. Repeated bending can crack the coating, while trimming through a raised area may leave an uneven edge.

Glue zones and areas intended for writing should normally remain uncoated. If Spot UV will be combined with foil stamping or another finish, the production sequence and adhesion should be tested before bulk production.



Approve the Effect with a Physical Sample

A PDF can confirm the position of the UV mask, but it cannot show the final shine, height or texture. This matters most for Sand UV, Raised UV and Textured UV, where touch is part of the intended result.

For color-critical covers or premium packaging, approve a sample made with the intended paper or lamination. It provides a much clearer reference for bulk production than a digital mockup.
