Book Closures and Accessories

Book closures and accessories are used mainly on notebooks, planners, journals and albums. A book closure keeps the covers together, while a pen loop holds a writing instrument and a metal corner protector reinforces an exposed cover corner.

These components should be selected before the cover is assembled. Their attachment may be concealed beneath the covering material or endpaper, and their fit depends on the finished book thickness, cover stiffness and surface material.

Elastic Band Closures

An elastic band closure provides a lightweight way to secure a book without adding a projecting clasp. It is commonly used on hardcover notebooks, planners and journals, and it can also be added to selected spiral books with sufficiently firm covers.

Position and Attachment

A vertical elastic band runs parallel to the spine, normally near the fore edge. It leaves the central cover area available for a title or logo. A horizontal band crosses the front cover and becomes a more visible part of the cover composition.

On a rigid case, the elastic ends can pass through prepared slots in the back board and be secured beneath the pastedown or book endpaper. The fixing area must remain flat so that it does not create visible ridges inside the cover.

A flexibound cover has a thinner and more flexible base. Its attachment and elastic tension must therefore be adjusted so that the band does not pull the cover out of shape.

Width and Tension

For an A5 notebook, a flat elastic approximately 6–7 mm wide is a practical starting point. A heavier A4 planner or larger book may use an 8–10 mm band to create broader contact and a more balanced proportion.

These dimensions are references rather than fixed rules. Elastic composition, book height and finished thickness all affect the required length and tension.

The band should remain in position without cutting into the cover. If it is too loose, it can slip away from the fore edge; if it is too tight, it can mark the surface, curve a flexible cover or pull around its fixing points.

Magnetic and Snap Closures

A magnetic book closure normally uses a projecting strap or tab. The magnet and matching metal component are concealed beneath the strap and front-cover material, leaving no exposed fastening parts.

Their positions must be calculated from the completed book, including the spine width and fore-edge thickness. Poor alignment can make the strap twist or prevent the magnet from meeting squarely.

A snap-button closure uses visible metal hardware attached to a reinforced strap. It is suitable for structured cloth or PU leather notebooks, but the internal attachment must be covered so that the fastener does not press through the endpaper.

Both structures add thickness at the fore edge. If the book will enter a fitted sleeve or box, the closed strap and fastening hardware must be included in the final external dimensions.

Pen Loops

A pen loop is usually attached to the fore edge of the back cover so that the pen sits beside the closed page block. Its material and opening should be selected for the intended pen rather than described only as a standard size.

Set the Loop Size from the Pen

Elastic approximately 15–20 mm wide provides a practical starting point for a single pen loop. The actual loop opening must still be tested with the pen’s widest barrel or grip section. The clip normally remains outside the loop.

Elastic accommodates a range of barrel diameters. A cloth or PU loop stretches less and is better suited to a notebook supplied with a specified pen.

Position the Pen Loop

An integrated pen loop can be anchored beneath the pastedown or built into the wrapped cover edge. The attachment should not depend on a small exposed glue area at the fore edge.

The inserted pen should not extend beyond the head or tail of the cover. When the notebook also has an elastic band closure, both positions must be tested together so that the band does not trap the pen or pull the loop sideways.

The pen holder shown on this multi-functional hardcover business notebook uses a different external structure, but it illustrates why the holder and its intended writing instrument must be treated as part of the finished cover specification.

For Spiral and Wire-O Binding, the back cover must be firm enough to support the loop. The pen position should not obstruct page turning or prevent the cover from folding back.

Metal Corner Protectors

A metal corner protector fits over the corner of a rigid cover. It reduces direct wear on the covering material and adds a visible metal detail, but it does not protect the page block or replace suitable packing.

Match the Channel to the Finished Cover

Common hardware includes face sizes around 16 mm or 22 mm and channel depths around 3.5–4.5 mm. The relevant measurement is the completed cover edge, including board, adhesive and wrapping material, rather than the nominal board thickness alone.

A channel that is too shallow can crush the covering material or fail to seat fully. A loose corner protector may move, catch on packaging or leave an uneven gap around the edge.

Check the Corner and Cover Material

Most standard metal corner protectors are intended for square, rigid corners. They should not be forced onto a flexible cover or a rounded corner. Rounded cover and page corners require a separately specified radius, as explained in Die Cutting for Printing.

The protector is fitted after the cover has been wrapped and must be crimped evenly. Cloth, velvet and PU can compress or mark differently, so installation should be tested on the selected surface. The structural behavior of cloth-covered cases is covered further in our Book Cloth Guide.

Gold, silver, black or antique-style hardware can be coordinated with foil stamping, binding wire or other metal details. The physical samples should be compared because reflected color cannot be judged accurately from screen images alone.

Plan All Accessory Positions Together

The elastic band, strap, pen loop and corner protector should be marked on the same cover layout. This confirms that closures do not pass over essential titles, logos or barcodes and that metal corners do not conceal important artwork.

It also reveals conflicts between components. A pen loop may sit too close to a magnetic strap, while a horizontal elastic band may cross raised decoration or interfere with a projecting holder.

Slots, holes and concealed fixing areas belong to the structural specification rather than the printed artwork. Their final positions should follow the approved cover template and finished book dimensions.

Approve the Complete Sample

The sample should use the intended board, covering material, page count and accessories. The actual pen should be included when a pen loop is required, and any fitted packaging should be checked with the book closed.

The elastic band should return to position without marking the cover. Magnetic or snap closures should meet without twisting, the pen loop should recover after use, and every corner protector should sit level without cutting the covering material.
